Keep Cigars In Cellophane Or Not?

If you attend any event focused around cigars you are going to find that this conversation will come up at some time. Should you keep your cigars in the cellophane or take them out and let them sit there in the humidor without it?  Well even representatives from the cigar companies don’t really have a perfect answer for this.

A lot of people like to be able to inhale the aroma of the cigars when they open their humidors.  It has a feeling that just can’t be replaced when you keep your cigars in the cellophane.

Most of the representatives at Cigarfest are going to tell you to keep them in the cellophane.  However we could never really good a really good answer as to the specifics of why to keep them in the cellophane.  What it really comes down to is keeping them safe from outside factors.  If they are in the plastic then it is harder to tarnish them.  Which makes total sense and I believe in this idea as well.

Basically you are going to have opinions from both sides of the board.  You are never going to get a definitive yes or no.  This will ultimately come down to what you feel is best for you.  If you don’t want the oils from your hands on the cigars when you open the humidor then keep them in the cellophane.  This is also only an option if you are constantly handling your cigars quite often.  If you are from the category of letting your cigars age and leaving them, then this might not be a concern for you at all.

So if you are new to the world of cigar smoking this might be something that a first might turn you off.  You might think that you got a cigar that is old, moldy or just badly produced.  However this is not the case as this is usually a sign that you are dealing with a rather good cigar.

The reason I say that it is a good cigar is because white power on the cigar is a sign that the leaf that was used in the wrapper is in bloom.  It is actually the oils in the wrapper that put off this white substance.  It actually shows that the leaf is healthy and good.

It is a good idea to keep your cigars that have this on it at a consistent temperature and try to keep it away from humidity. It will help to make sure that it stays in prime smoking condition.

There are many measures of having a top shelf cigar.  We have already spoken about the most important factor, being consistency.  But after you have that there are a couple of other issues that you will want to look for if you are trying to make sure you are getting the best quality cigar.

For one you will want to make sure that it must draw and burn well.  The importance of having a cigar burning well is for a number of reasons. First you will want to enjoy your cigar longer and if your cigar had been underfilled it will be an easy draw and burn a lot faster.  This isn’t good for most people who like to enjoy cigars.  However there are some cigars where this is what you are looking for, but these will not fall under being in our top shelf category.

Another reason you don’t want a underfilled and easy draw cigar is that you will get a cigar that is considered a hot smoke.  A hot smoke is when a  cigar gets very hot from all the heat and will in turn become harsh to the taste.  It is a difficult concept to explain through writing about it.  However if you have ever experienced this then you will know exactly what I am talking about.  The cigar seems to lose its taste, at least in our humble opinion.

Another way to understand that you are getting a high quality top shelf cigar is to look at its construction.  By construction we mean is it burning evenly all the way down.  This is a sign of a good construction process (proper rolling).
If your cigar is top shelf then there is a chance that it will be able to hold a ash for about an inch before it falls off.

If you have a cigar that is able to stand up to all of these standards then there is a chance of having a top shelf cigar.  But before you go ahead and write off the cigar that you may currently
